What is an Airport Transit Schengen Visa?

An Airport Transit Schengen Visa (ATV) is a type of visa that allows travelers to transit through the international transit areas of airports situated within the Schengen Area. It is required for individuals who are not citizens of Schengen member countries but need to change flights at a Schengen airport on their way to a non-Schengen destination.

The ATV is specifically for transit purposes and does not grant the holder permission to enter the Schengen Area or leave the airport transit area. It is intended for travelers who have a connecting flight in a Schengen airport and need to pass through the international transit zone without entering the Schengen Area.

Not all travelers need an ATV. Citizens of certain countries are exempt from the ATV requirement and can transit through a Schengen airport without a visa, as long as they do not leave the transit area.

It’s important to note that the specific requirements and procedures for obtaining an ATV may vary depending on the country issuing the visa. It is advisable to check with the embassy or consulate of the country you plan to transit through to confirm whether you need an ATV and to understand the application process.
